# Create an Automatic Discount

## An automatic discount is a discount that applies automatically when the parameters are met. Unlike a coupon, it does not require the customer to enter a code to receive the discount.

1. **[Begin on the Promotions section under Discounts](https://merchants.cityhive.net/#!/ffffff/discounts)**

4. **(Optional)** Choose a template you would like to

   Selecting any of these templates will automatically apply a 10% discount or Free Shipping. You can always **click the Back button to make changes if needed 
   
   To create a coupon from scratch, select the Advanced option

5. **Enter the details of the discount**  
     1. **Rule Name:** Customers will not see this. Make sure to keep it under 12 characters, one word, and don't use any special characters.
     2. ******Use Rule Name as the Discount Label:****** Toggle this option and your custom discount names appear directly to customers. Names are limited to 25 characters to keep checkout clean and scannable.
     3. **Rule Description:** Internal description to help you understand why the discount is being granted. This is only visible via the dashboard. 
     4. **Discount Amount: **Amount that will be taken off the total order amount. You can toggle between dollar and percentage modes by clicking the $ symbol in the text field.
     5. **Fixed Discount:** Toggle this on if you want the discount to apply off of each item.
     6. **Fixed Price:** Toggle this on if you want to the price of all items to be set to the discount amount that is chosen.

7. **Select the discount parameters ** 
     1. **Offer type:** Limit the discount to specific order types (pickup, delivery, shipping)
     2. **Email:** Limit the discount to specific email addresses ([youremail@domain.com](mailto:youremail@domain.com)) or email domains (anyone with "@gmail.com")
     3. **Date Limited:** Limit the discount to a specific set of dates (today to next Monday)
     4. **Time Limited:** Limit the discount to specific hours of the day
     5. **Day Limited:** Limit the discount to a specific day of the month (every month on the 21st) or day of the week (every Friday)
     6. **Minimum Order Amount:** Limit the discount to only apply on orders with subtotal above this amount
     7. **Category and Product:** Limit the discount to only apply on certain products, categories, or quantities. Some of the more popular filters are: 
            1. Type - Choose from the categories of products in your store (wine, beer, spirits, etc)
            2. POS ID - Enter the SKUs from your POS that you want the coupon to apply to
            3. Tags - Enter the product tag that you want the coupon to apply to
            4. Size - Choose the size of product you want the discount to apply to (750mL)
            5. Minimum or maximum quantity of products
            6. Discount qualifying products only - recommended
     8. **First Order:** Limit the discount to only apply to customers who have less than a specified number of orders
     9. **Excludes Discounts:** Limit the discount to only apply on non-sale items or items without the "nodiscount" tag (recommended so customers can not double dip)
     10. **Double Discounts: **Allows the discount to be stacked with automatic discounts
     11. **Customer Specific**: Limit the discount to only apply to specific customer IDs
     12. **Order Origin: **Limit the discount to a specific origin (Mobile app or Website) 
8. **Discount Feature (Optional)** Creating a discount on delivery or shipping amount

   **Recommended setup for a Free Delivery discount:** On the first screen under **Basic Information**, set the discount amount to **$0**. Then, go to the **Day Limited** section and enter the dates the discount will be active. Next, in the **Feature Discount** section, set the discount amount to **100% (click on the $ to change to %)**, add a **Max Discount Amount** to apply to the fee and **toggle on Delivery Fee. **

9. **Marketing Options (Optional)** if you would like to promote this specific discount on your Deals page on your website

10. **Review your setup**, then **click Create** to complete your discount
